Drip Irrigation Retrofit: A San Diego Water-Saving Guide
Most San Diego homes use more water outside than inside, and the biggest culprit is usually an aging spray system watering shrubs and trees that never needed overhead irrigation in the first place. If your yard has pop-up sprayers arcing over bare mulch, fanning water onto the sidewalk, or misting away in an afternoon breeze, a drip retrofit is one of the highest-return projects you can do — and it doesn't require tearing up the whole yard.
Here's how to think through the change, what it involves, and where homeowners typically run into trouble.
Why Spray Heads Struggle in Our Climate
Spray irrigation was designed for lawns, not planting beds. In San Diego, three local factors make it especially inefficient:
- Low humidity and steady coastal breeze. A fine spray loses water to evaporation and drift before it ever reaches the root zone, particularly during Santa Ana events.
- Sloped lots. Neighborhoods like Del Cerro, La Jolla, Point Loma, and much of East County are built on grades. Spray applies water faster than soil can absorb it, so it runs downhill and pools at the bottom.
- Tight clay soils. Large parts of inland San Diego have clay or decomposed granite subsoil with slow infiltration rates. Fast application equals runoff; slow application equals absorption.
Drip solves all three by delivering water at a low rate directly to soil at the base of each plant, under the mulch, where roots can actually use it.
What a Retrofit Actually Involves
You usually don't need new trenching or a new valve manifold. In most cases the existing lateral lines stay in the ground and the changes happen at the head and the valve.
A typical conversion looks like this:
- Cap unnecessary heads. Beds rarely need the same head count once you switch to drip.
- Convert a remaining riser into a drip zone using a pressure-regulating filter head, which knocks incoming pressure down to the low range drip emitters require and screens out grit that clogs them.
- Run distribution tubing through the bed, staked below the mulch layer, with emitters placed at each plant's root zone rather than evenly across bare soil.
- Adjust the controller. Drip zones run far longer than spray zones — often 30 to 60 minutes — but much less frequently.
That last step is where most DIY retrofits fail. Homeowners install beautiful drip tubing and then leave the old 8-minute, four-days-a-week schedule in place. The plants slowly decline because water never penetrates deep enough to develop roots.
Choosing Emitters and Tubing
Two main approaches work well here:
- Point-source emitters on 1/4" tubing: best for shrubs, trees, and spaced-out native or Mediterranean plantings where each plant has different water needs. You can add emitters as plants mature.
- Inline dripline (tubing with emitters pre-installed at set spacing): best for dense groundcover, mass plantings, or vegetable beds where you want even coverage across the whole area.
Pressure-compensating emitters are worth it on any slope — they deliver the same output at the top of the hill as the bottom.
Don't Forget the Controller
A weather-based smart controller pairs naturally with a drip retrofit. It pulls local evapotranspiration data and dials watering up in September heat and back down when the marine layer settles in through May and June. Pair It With the Rest of the Yard
A retrofit is a good moment to fix related issues while beds are open:
- Refresh mulch to 2–3 inches to hold moisture in and keep tubing shaded from UV.
- Replace thirsty turf edges with decomposed granite paths, flagstone stepping areas, or paver seating zones that need no water at all.
- Add low-water plants — manzanita, Cleveland sage, deer grass, coast rosemary — that will thrive on the new drip zones.
- Schedule a seasonal cleanup so old growth and debris don't bury the new emitters.
Watch for These Common Problems
Drip needs a little attention. Check filters a few times a year, walk the zones each season looking for chewed tubing (rabbits and ground squirrels are frequent offenders), and flush the line ends occasionally. Because leaks hide under mulch, a rising bill with no visible puddle is often the first clue.
